Cyclone Arnab makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh with no casualties reported

NEW DELHI PSqure Daily Correspondent

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab has completed its landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Yanam, between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. The system brought dangerous winds and extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning before weakening into a severe cyclonic storm as it moved entirely inland. Chief Minister Naidu confirmed that no casualties have been reported.

The storm triggered severe waterlogging and disrupted local movement. In Konaseema district, powerful winds uprooted numerous trees. The coastal effects extended into Tamil Nadu, where massive sea waves breached roads and flooded residential neighbourhoods in Chennai’s Ennore area. Torrential downpours are also drenching Chennai alongside several northern, delta, and western districts.

Extensive mitigation measures were activated ahead of the October 28 landfall. Officials shut educational institutions across 16 coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh, converting 609 of them into relief shelters. Additionally, 17,054 volunteers from the NCC, NSS, and Scouts were deployed to assist. Odisha also mobilised disaster response teams, while states including West Bengal, Telangana, Kerala, Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh expect extreme rainfall.

The inclement weather threatens commercial flight operations to Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. Travellers have been warned to allocate additional time for airport commutes due to hazardous road conditions.
