BJP secures 16 legislative council seats across four states as SP captures Varanasi

NEW DELHI PSqure Daily Correspondent

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance secured 16 Legislative Council seats across four states, despite facing notable setbacks in politically significant constituencies. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP captured four out of eleven contested seats, retained its hold on Meerut, and established leads in four additional races.

However, the ruling party suffered a defeat in the Varanasi Teachers' constituency, where Samajwadi Party candidate Lal Bihari Yadav emerged victorious. In another key regional contest, the Congress maintained its ground in Nagpur, despite failing to secure any other seats across the four states holding elections.

The vote counting process in Uttar Pradesh was heavily disrupted by political clashes and accusations of electoral malpractice. In Agra, tensions boiled over into physical altercations, with Samajwadi Party figure Akash Agarwal alleging that he was subjected to physical aggression by BJP supporters. Concurrently, opposition members staged a boycott of the counting procedures in Gorakhpur, citing alleged irregularities at the tallying centres.
