The Samajwadi Party claimed a notable victory in Varanasi, while the BJP took four seats in an election marred by clashes and opposition boycotts.
Samajwadi Party candidate Lal Bihari Yadav has emerged victorious in the Varanasi Teachers' constituency during the recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, claiming a win in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured four of the eleven available seats, successfully retaining the Meerut constituencies, and was reported to be leading in four additional seats.
The electoral process faced significant disruptions, with various counting centers reporting tensions, allegations of assault, and claims of malpractice. In Gorakhpur, the opposition initiated a boycott of the proceedings, citing alleged electoral irregularities.
Further unrest occurred in Agra, where a confrontation broke out between members of the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. Amid the clashes at the counting centers, Samajwadi Party figure Akash Agarwal stated that he was subjected to physical aggression by supporters of the BJP.
