Congress demands answers after ITBP chief describes 'ongoing' face-off in Arunachal
Opposition parties press the government for clarity after the ITBP director general told troops that confrontations with China are continuing.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police chief has told personnel that face-offs with Chinese forces at multiple locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border are still ongoing, triggering sharp demands from opposition parties for the government to come clean on the situation.
Congress moved quickly to question the government after the director general's remarks to troops became known, asking why the public and Parliament had not been informed of a continuing standoff in the sensitive northeastern state. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi went further, calling for a special session of Parliament to discuss what he described as Chinese intrusions in Arunachal Pradesh.
The government has yet to make any formal statement addressing the ITBP chief's characterisation of the border situation. Opposition leaders argued that any active face-off with Chinese forces along Indian territory demands immediate parliamentary scrutiny and full transparency from the administration.
Arunachal Pradesh is already under strain from a separate dispute over the proposed 11,200 MW Siang hydroelectric project, where clashes between security personnel and protesters left at least 40 officers injured. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has invited youth groups for talks as local communities push back against survey work, citing fears over displacement and environmental damage. The twin flashpoints have placed the state at the centre of national attention.
