Jamia Millia Islamia to reinstate student union elections after twenty-year hiatus
NEW DELHI PSqure Daily Correspondent
Jamia Millia Islamia has announced the reinstatement of student union elections after a gap of twenty years. The university administration ordered that polls must be conducted within 15 days following the approval of the student union constitution. Alongside this decision, officials revoked disciplinary measures previously taken against demonstrating students and initiated an inquiry into the behavior of university security staff.
As part of the resolution, the protesters are required to publicly apologize for remarks directed at the administration and must delete associated posts from social media platforms. Despite these agreements, the wider agitation has entered its 16th day. Two students are continuing their hunger strike, citing the administration's failure to provide assurances regarding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and the Chief Proctor.
In a related development, the university filed a formal complaint accusing Congress Members of Parliament of trespassing on the campus during the ongoing demonstrations. The Delhi Police have not yet responded to the trespassing allegations, nor have they addressed separate claims that several students were detained outside the institution's Gate 7.
