Sensex plunges over 600 points in early trade amid IT sell-off and rising crude prices
The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty suffered significant early losses as persistently high oil prices and heavy selling in the IT sector weighed on the markets.
Indian equity markets experienced a sharp downturn in early trading, with the 30-share BSE Sensex declining 601.14 points to reach 72,997.55. The broader 50-share NSE Nifty mirrored this steep drop, falling 146 points to 22,604.80.
The widespread market slump was primarily driven by persistently elevated crude oil prices and significant selling pressure within the information technology sector.
The trading session opened with initial weaknesses before the losses deepened rapidly. Earlier in the morning, the Sensex had recorded a moderate decrease of 281.95 points to 73,316.21, while the Nifty had fallen by 63.15 points to 22,694.60, before both indices continued their downward trajectory.
