St Petersburg came under a suspected Ukrainian drone attack, with multiple explosions reported across the city. Video circulating on social media showed bursts of fire lighting up the night sky, suggesting a coordinated swarm assault on Russian soil.

The strike on St Petersburg came as Russia continued its own relentless aerial campaign against Ukraine, with attacks on Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Volyn and Rivne leaving at least eight people dead and cutting electricity supplies to approximately one million Ukrainians.

Moscow has pressed its campaign against Ukraine's power grid with sustained missile and drone bombardments, plunging large parts of the country into darkness. The reported assault on St Petersburg, one of Russia's most prominent and heavily populated cities, would represent a significant escalation in Ukraine's effort to carry the conflict beyond its own borders and strike deep into Russian territory.
