Rohit Sharma likely to return as Mumbai Indians captain for IPL 2027

The Mumbai Indians are contemplating a major leadership change for the 2027 Indian Premier League, with Rohit Sharma likely to be reinstated as captain and Tilak Varma positioned as his deputy. The proposed leadership overhaul is part of a broader strategy by the franchise to engineer a turnaround after finishing ninth in the previous season.

Alongside the potential change in captaincy, the franchise is expected to trade Hardik Pandya to another team ahead of the upcoming auction. While several franchises are reportedly keen on acquiring Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin has warned the Chennai Super Kings that Mumbai will demand one specific star player in exchange, and will refuse to proceed with any agreement without him.

The strategic changes also extend to the team's technical personnel. A revamped coaching staff has been assembled to guide the squad, led by Kieron Pollard. He will be joined on the new coaching panel by Robin Uthappa and T Dilip.
