India rebukes UN over 'India-based' tag for Dawood Ibrahim's D-Company
New Delhi calls out what it terms glaring inaccuracies in a UN rapporteur's description of the fugitive gangster's criminal network.
India has formally challenged a United Nations rapporteur's characterisation of Dawood Ibrahim's criminal organisation D-Company as 'India-based', calling the description inaccurate and demanding a correction.
Indian diplomat Raghoo Puri pushed back sharply, stressing that Dawood is a wanted criminal in India and that the UN's own listing entry places him in Pakistan. Puri pointedly noted that Dawood resides in the same country where Osama bin Laden was eventually found, underlining what New Delhi regards as Islamabad's continued harbouring of internationally designated fugitives.
New Delhi described the rapporteur's formulation as containing glaring inaccuracies and said the 'India-based' label fundamentally misrepresents the situation. India has long demanded Dawood's extradition from Pakistan, and officials view the mislabelling at UN level as a matter requiring urgent correction to avoid lending any legitimacy to a false geographical association.
