Rays vow to keep running despite costly errors in World Series Game 1 defeat

Tampa Bay insist their aggressive baserunning philosophy will not change after two miscues contributed to a 3-2 loss to Milwaukee.

The Tampa Bay Rays suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night, but insisted afterwards that the baserunning mistakes which helped cost them the game would not prompt any change in approach.

Two costly errors on the basepaths proved significant as the Rays mounted a late comeback that ultimately fell short. Despite the defeat, Tampa Bay players were defiant, declaring that aggressive baserunning is central to their identity and something they have no intention of abandoning as the series continues.

The game also produced a moment of history in its very first pitch, when Brewers reliever Jacob Misiorowski threw a 103.5 mph delivery to set a new record for the fastest pitch ever recorded in a World Series game.

Milwaukee, playing on home soil, held firm as the Rays threatened to overturn the deficit in the closing stages, ultimately preserving a one-run victory to take an early lead in the Fall Classic. Tampa Bay will be eager to respond in Game 2, though their willingness to push the boundaries on the bases — errors and all — appears set to remain a defining feature of their campaign regardless of the risks involved.
